Heart Rate Variability

Heart Rate Variability (HRV) is one of the most useful physiological markers for detecting accumulated fatigue from overtraining, because it reflects how well your autonomic nervous system (ANS) is balancing recovery and stress.

Here’s the breakdown:

1. What HRV Measures

• HRV is the variation in time between heartbeats (measured in milliseconds).

• High HRV generally indicates a dominant parasympathetic (“rest-and-digest”) state, meaning your body is well recovered and adaptable.

• Low HRV often means a dominant sympathetic (“fight-or-flight”) state, suggesting your body is under stress.

2. How Overtraining Impacts HRV

When you train hard without adequate recovery:

• Sympathetic overactivation → The body stays in a stress-response mode for extended periods.

• Reduced parasympathetic tone → Your ability to “switch on” recovery processes declines.

• Result: HRV drops (or becomes unusually stable at a low level), showing your system is under chronic stress.

3. The Difference Between Acute Fatigue and Accumulated Fatigue

• Acute fatigue (e.g., after one hard workout) may cause a short-term HRV drop, but it usually rebounds after rest.

• Accumulated fatigue from overtraining shows up as a persistent low HRV trend over multiple days or weeks, often alongside:

• Resting heart rate slightly elevated

• Decreased performance despite effort

• Poor sleep quality

• Mood changes and irritability

4. Using HRV to Monitor Training Load

• Track daily: Morning HRV readings are most reliable.

• Look for trends, not single numbers.

• If HRV is consistently below your baseline for 3+ days, it’s often a sign to reduce intensity, add rest days, or shift to active recovery.

• If HRV rebounds after rest, it’s more likely temporary fatigue; if not, it may indicate overreaching or overtraining syndrome.

In short:

Overtraining pushes your nervous system into chronic stress mode, lowering HRV over time. Consistent tracking lets you catch this trend early, before it turns into performance decline or injury risk.
